Multisectional Works

In 1987/88 Roger Lips shifted his processing techniques from the mechanical enzymatic method to more of an original photographic one, as in the extreme detail enlargement, reversal of tone values, multiple exposures, the color shifts under artificial lighting as well as the use of the special screen characteristics from Polaroid’s instant slide material.

Two triptychs with more of a religious archaic content were done in the middle of the ’80s. In 1987/88 Lips took a few older photographs and organized them into strict groupings of two each. Photos that were barely changed from earlier trips are placed next to detail enlargements or printed tracks of light on B/W negative material. In photos where faces appear, they are much less re-worked than when Lips did work in the previous years.

It appears as if where Lips had previously laid layers on top of one another, he now sets them next to each other and the coalescence, the “more” that comes

about in the association of pictures, is transferred to the mind of the beholder.

In 1991 three illuminated display cases were made. All three dealt with the complete de-construction of a picture from 1985, the “blue head” (No. 020).

A year later the “AIDS Triptychs” followed, an accusation with a bitter moral running through it of the homosexual approach in sex, love and physicalness. As a positive counter-picture to these references is the last triptych in this connection – pictures of a free dance by two men.

By clicking on the pictures you can get large-scale reproductions with a bit of further information. The numbers are the numbers in the Catalogue of Artwork. You can scroll back and forth when you are at the large reproductions level.
