In the late ’80s Lips worked less with chemical means or drawings. Now he uses original photographic methods, reversal of tone values, detail enlargements, double exposure and sandwich montage more frequently.

Two important triptychs are made. One of them will only be finished in 1990. Lips begins to grapple with the circumstances of his own HIV infection.

“Positive-Negative” is the name of an exhibition in Berlin. Two simply montages carry the same title.

A second group of men’s heads are done. Lips looks at many old photographs in a new way and puts them together in a series of diptychs. Some of them had not received any further re-working.
